KING COUNTY, WA — A woman died Monday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle reversing in the parking lot of Salt House Church in Kirkland, according to City of Kirkland.

The fatal accident took place in the lot of the building located at 1190 Northeast 80th Street at around 12:30 p.m.

The woman had exited a vehicle with another passenger and walked to the trunk area of the idling car to retrieve items. The driver then suddenly accelerated in reverse, driving over the woman before crashing into the church building.

Kirkland police and medics responded to the scene, but the victim was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the vehicle, a female acquaintance of the victim, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. She later told police she had believed her car was in drive when she accelerated.

An investigation remained underway as of Tuesday.
