What is the potential new law regarding driver’s education?

On Behalf of | Jan 25, 2024 | Personal Injury |

Potential changes for new drivers are on the horizon in Washington State. Lawmakers are seeking ways to make the roads safer.

The latest idea is to make some changes to the licensing laws for younger drivers.

Change to requirements

The proposed requirement mandates that all drivers under the age of 24 must pass a driver’s education course before obtaining a license. Currently, 16 and 17-year-olds must take such a course, but there is no requirement for first-time drivers over the age of 18. The Washington State Legislature has tasked the Department of Licensing with developing a plan for this new requirement, with the goal of implementation by 2026.

Reasons for the change

The existing system recognizes the importance of formal training for novice drivers. However, it only does so for those who get a driver’s license as a minor. Lawmakers recognize that younger drivers who may be over the age of 18 could still benefit from additional training.

They feel mandating driver’s education is the best way to ensure these young drivers have the proper knowledge and skills before they are on the road. The goal is to reduce the high number of accidents involving drivers under the age of 24 in the state.

By requiring a driver’s education course, the state hopes to instill a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, fostering responsible driving habits from the outset. The proposed changes underscore the importance of structured training to equip young drivers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to navigate real-world driving scenarios safely.
