Self-driving car features can cause an accident

On Behalf of | Feb 20, 2024 | Car Accidents |

It seems like there is new technology every day and when it comes to vehicles, self-driving features can be attractive to drivers. While this technology can help drivers make decisions, if the driver is not attentive, other people on the road can be injured.

Vehicle features

Self-driving vehicles come with several safety options like cameras to help them navigate lane changes, see traffic lights and check for traffic behind them as well as sensors that can help them detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and road signs.

They may also have steering assistance, as well as acceleration and braking controls. These vehicles can make decisions based on information in the environment, but the driver is still responsible for responding to their surroundings.

Accidents and injuries

There are many issues that can lead to an accident involving a self-driving car. If the sensors fail, the vehicle may not alert the driver to a person or another vehicle and result in a collision. Self-driving vehicles can have difficulty managing complex road conditions, like construction zones, sudden weather changes or detours.

If the driver is unable to take over control of the vehicle and there is an accident, victims can suffer from bruises, sprains, fractures and broken bones. In more serious situations, they could have severe head trauma, including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and internal bleeding.

They can lose time from work and their medical bills could be very expensive for ongoing care.

At high speeds, an accident could be fatal for a person who is hit, or for the occupants of the car. It may be necessary to seek compensation from the driver.
