Concerning statistics about fatal motor vehicle accidents

On Behalf of | Jan 5, 2024 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Most of our readers in Washington know that motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of deaths and injuries in America. After all, most people have probably seen the aftermath of a car accident on the side of the road during their day-to-day commutes, although thankfully most of these accidents are probably just “fender benders.”

But, when you take a look at the statistics concerning motor vehicle accidents in America, particularly ones that involve fatalities, it is easy to see that we should all be worried about the dangers that are present on the roadways in our country at any given time.

Fatality statistics

According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, the number of motor vehicle accidents that involve fatalities has been on the rise in recent years. In fact, the statistics from one recent year, 2021, showed that year to mark the second year in a row in which the number of fatalities in motor vehicle accidents in America increased. The numbers are stark: 2019 saw over 39,100 deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents in America, then over 42,300 in 2020, followed by nearly 47,000 in 2021.

And, as concerning as the raw data from these fatal motor vehicle accidents over that three-year period might be, the number of injuries is considerably higher. The NSC statistics show that in 2021 there were approximately 5.4 million injuries in car accidents for which the injured party consulted a medical professional. That means these weren’t just “fender benders.”

Fatal motor vehicle accidents are far too common in America. Distracted driving, drunk driving and even drowsy driving are all likely part of the problem. If you have been involved in any type of car accident that was caused by another party, you may be able to seek compensation in a personal injury lawsuit.
